Glossybox June 2012

Today I got my very first Glossybox, after unsubscribing from Glymm last month.  I’d like to say that I’m a little disappointed, but not really. Glossybox, like Glymm, is another monthly subscription service. It costs $15 per month, but I got my first month at $1.50 off, so this one was only $13.50. If you’re interested in subscribing, you can visit Glossybox.ca. Glossybox is the most international of the beauty boxes, spanning many countries, with plans to expand into several more. So, let’s get right into what is in this month’s Glossybox (Canada).

The box itself is quite substantial, and because it is pretty much unmarked (no brand names, only the little crown logo), it could easily be reused as a gift box. Inside is black tissue paper, tied in matching pink ribbon, completed with a sticker.

Right when you open the tissue paper in the box, there is a black envelope. Inside the envelope are three cards. The first is the product card, telling you what you have this month, next is a little pamphlet on Wella Professionals Haircare, which has a product in this month’s box, and then another little card about Neutrogena sunscreens, which also has a product in this month’s box.

The first product that you see is a Venus Embrace Razor. The card says: Get ready for the shave fit for a goddess. Our first women’s razor created with 5 blades hugs every curve to get virtually every hair even bikini hair. An ultra-close shave and incredible Venus smoothness. This is a full-size product (obviously, it’s the whole razor), and retails for $13.43. This isn’t a high-end product, which is what I usually expect from my beauty boxes, but at the same time, I’m going to need razors, so it’s nice to have one around. I’ll definitely use it; it just wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be.

The next product is the Biore 4-in-1 Revitalizing Cleanser. Purify, cleanse, tone, and refresh skin in mere minutes. This unique self-foaming cleaner wipes out over 93% of impurities. This product is also full-sized, at 200mL, and retails for $9.99. Once again, I do use face cleansers, and coincidentally, I’m out of my usual one, so I’m definitely going to use this, but I can find Biore at my local drugstore, so I wasn’t too impressed. Still, I guess it saved me the trip. It smells like what a hair salon usually smells like. I like that.

Next is a bottle of Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz. Free your hair with irresistible chunky texture achieving that matte, carefree beachy hair look. Available exclusively in salons. This product is 150mL, is full-sized, and retails for $16.99. This is the only product I got this month that I couldn’t buy at Wal-Mart. I’m also really looking forward to using it, because it’s a texture product that you scrunch into dry hair, and that’s a style that I tend to rock a lot during the summer. It smells a little bit like formaldehyde. That’s not so great. I will definitely keep you posted on how it works.

The fourth product is a Cover girl Flipstick Blendable Lip Duo. New! This double ended lip color stick has a side for shimmer, and a side for color. Blend shades together to create endless lip looks.  Full-sized, retailing for $12.50. I’d seen the commercials on TV for this product with Sophia Vergara, but wasn’t completely sold on the product. Honestly, I doubt I would have bought it if it wasn’t in the Glossybox, because it seems a little too gimmicky for me to spend $13 on. The color I got is #855 Minx, and it’s pretty dark. I just tried it on, and it is dark. I don't think that I can wear it as is, perhaps with a lighter color to tone it down a bit. God, that's disappointing. It has a smooth consistency, and smells like artificial vanilla.I'm especially sad because in the style profile, I make it very obvious that I am quite pale, and I feel like this color would be great on someone who perhaps had skin that was a bit darker than mine.
Top to bottom: Both shades together, the lighter highlight shade, then the darker shade.

Next is a little tube of Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion SPF 55. Ultra-light and fast-absorbing, and voted #1 best-feeling sunscreen by Canadian Dermatologists. Contains helioplex which provides photostable UVA/UVB protection. The full-size costs $15.99, but this one is only 14mL, so that makes it worth about $2.54. I get these frequently for free at the drugstore, so I’m not really impressed with this at all. The sunscreen is really nice, but it’s not really something special. I’m sure it will get used up, because I wear sunscreen every day, but I’m wholly unimpressed. However, in some praise, the sunscreen does go on dry, and I can use it on my face without breaking out, so I definitely feel protected when I wear it.

In the same vein as the sunscreen is a bottle of Olay Regenerist Wrinkle Revolution Complex. Advanced microfillers instantly smooth the look of fine lines. The anti-aging formula with BioPeptide and B3 complex hydrates and improves the appearance of deep lines in just 14 days!  This is another little sample, clocking in at just 7mL, with the full-size being 50mL at $30.99. Therefore, this little tube is worth $4.33. This is another drugstore giveaway product that I have gotten before for free. I don’t really have any fine-lines or wrinkles just yet, because I’m only 20, so I’m thinking that this one may be passed on to my mother perhaps.

Finally, there was bonus item: a packet containing one Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips (the kind that go on your nose and rip out the gross bits). Pore strips are the deepest way to clean you pores. In just one use, you remove a week’s worth of built up dirt – and it only takes 10 minutes (isn’t that great?!). A pack of 8 costs $9.99, so this one is worth $1.25. I’ve never understood why these pore strips cost that much, so I’ve never bought them. I’ve always wanted to try one though, so I’m sure that will be a bit of amusement tonight, but I do a lot of deep cleansing anyway, so I’ll probably just stick to that, unless this one strip really rocks my world.

Overall, this box was not too bad. It had 4 full-size products that I will definitely use, plus a few smaller throw-in products, that although not super stellar, will probably get some use too. The total value of this box comes to $56.70. Taxes in, I paid $13.50 for this box (I got a discount off my first one), so I feel it was definitely worth the price. In future, I’d like to see a few more high-end brands, but for the most part, I can’t really complain. I will use all of these products, which is just about all I can ask for.

Did you get a Glossybox? Let me know how you liked it!
