Movie Review: Magic Mike

Last night, I saw Magic Mike. I know, I know, it’s a movie about strippers. But that’s alright. Because I enjoyed the hell out of this movie.

Magic Mike (Channing Tatum) is a stripper, and you can really pick up on the plot before even arriving at the theatre. Mike has a heart of gold, and a hidden talent, and is trying to get out of his sketchy job to follow his dreams. Oh, and there’s a girl that he likes. And a lot more strippers.

The plot, as you can surmise is pretty predictable, but this movie really has some charm, coupled with electric sex appeal. The acting was really great, although I’ve heard that Channing Tatum has a past in really stripping. In fact, I had heard that the screenplay was partially based on his experiences as a stripper. It should also be noted that Matthew McConaughey looks really, really good for being over 40. Joe Manganiello, from True Blood, plays a very minor role, but is still lookin’ hot. Finally, Alex Pettyfer plays Magic Mike’s young stripper-in-training friend. The only real downfall in the movie was that I felt that Cody Horn, who plays the love interest fell a little flat. I wish that she had amped up her performance a little bit. Next to the big personalities in the movie, she seemed a bit dull.

I’m afraid that this review is going to be both very short and very undetailed, because there really isn’t much to tell. I’d give this movie a 6/10, mostly because it’s chock full of sex appeal, and just enough heart to make it bearable. The only people in the theatre were women (I counted four guys in total), so don’t expect this to be much more than a novelty film. It is rated R for "pervasive sexuality, brief graphic nudity, language, and some drug use" and I'd definitely mind the rating. Enjoy ladies ;)
