Book of the Week #15: Life of Pi
The book I read this week was
Life of Pi by Yann Martel. I’d had this book for a long time, and just never read it. The long time I refer to being about five years now. There’s a
Life of Pi movie coming, so I figured I should read it in advance of the Oscar bait that is coming.
This novel is about Pi, an Indian boy. It’s divided into three parts, each of them a little different. The main part of the story involves a shipwreck, with Pi being set adrift in a boat full of animals, including a tiger. It’s really difficult to explain, and the story itself was difficult to follow. I suppose that’s why I didn’t like it much. It’s just too complicated and weird. I liked the part with the animals. That might just be my inner biologist coming out.
I really wanted this to be good. It was on the Canada Reads List in 2003, and those are usually so good! I’ve also read another book of Martel’s and it was good. This one was simply not my cup of tea. I found myself forcing my way through it. Although, both my parents loved it, so it could just be me. It is a bestseller, so perhaps you’ll enjoy it better than I.
