MTV VMAs 2013 Recap

Last night was the MTV Video Music Awards. Sometimes I feel like it’s a sign that I’m getting older when I no longer recognize all of the probably (I have no idea) talented (or maybe not) people on the red carpet. I probably have heard their songs on the radio, but I don’t know what a “Grimes” is. Either way, I made it through the red carpet in its entirety, as well as the full show. Here are my top/flop moments and fashion.

Moments

Top:

Justin Timberlake’s greatest hit medley. I was on the edge of my seat for the *NSYNC reunion. It was all of my childhood dreams coming true. Welllll...it was more like Justin Timberlake dances with four other similarly aged men. It was the Justin show, no doubt about it. But he was great! Man can dance. Also thanking his grandparents. Adorable.

Katy Perry’s finale. The boxing themed “Roar” was pretty great.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis winning for "Same Love", and then saying that of all the music he had made, this song was the most important.

Flop:

There’s only one because I couldn’t think of anything else that really made me cringe.
Miley Cyrus. Oh god. When she started singing “We Can’t Stop” it was uncomfortable. It might have been her stuffed toy themed body suit, or dancing characters, or the large booty-ed woman she groped shameless. My mouth just hung open. It was the moment when I was like, well, this can’t get any worse.

And then she started to do a duet of “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke. And it was worse. I’ve never felt second-hand embarrassment for anyone as strongly as I did at that moment and I don’t even know these people.

Fashion

It’s always amazing to me that the VMAs is the kind of place where you can wear an evening gown, or jeans. You can pretty much wear whatever and it’s okay. That doesn’t happen a lot of places.

Top Fashion, in no particular order:

Taylor Swift was looking grown up for like...the first time ever. I’m digging the short hair look with the understated dress.

I was watching this with one of my guy friends. His jaw dropped and he was said “She has to make your list.” I agree. Ciara was showing a lot of skin, but it wasn’t distasteful.

I could have done without Coco Rocha's theatrics. She tends to kind of jerk her body around when she’s posing for photos, which just looks awkward. But she was rocking it in this studded jacket. Classy and edgy.

I thought that Ariana Grande looked young and fun. The floral dress was pretty and I’m sure it was dang hot that night, so good for her for picking something weather appropriate. The white heels muted it a little bit too, which made it look normal-people wearable. She always looks like a little doll.

Oh Selena Gomez. I love your style so much. She was looking mighty classy last night in this navy gown, with a slit open front revealing some crazy underwire action. I don’t think just anybody could have pulled it off.

Flop:

Not to continue the Miley bashing, but dang. This is like a less good Gwen Stefani from her not pretty days.

Lady Gaga kind of looked like she was wearing a trash bag. And the black dress with the black hair was Morticia Addams-esque, and not in a good way.

It always surprises me how Sarah Hyland so much older than she looks. This look was Wonderwoman gone badly.

I hate to say it. I think Katy Perry's leopard print dress was okay, I could have done without the gold looked-like-potato-chips across the top, but it was okay. It was the grill. No.

I would have liked Holland Roden's outfit if it was a dress. Or pants. Not both.

Well...that’s it for this year. It was not too bad overall. I have high hopes that next year will have less Miley-induced cringing.

Oh, also I swiped all of these photos from MSNBC. I’m not making any money off of this, so I don’t feel too guilty.

What were your favourite moments from this year? Who had the hottest clothes?
