Back to School

It’s that time of the year again. Time to go back to school. I had a little bit of a panic attack this morning at the idea that my final first day of school might be on Friday. It’s probably not my last day of school. I bet there’s a master’s degree coming up soon after, but dang. Life is happening.

This is my senior year of my bachelor’s degree, and I have had two very rough years preceding it. A variety of factors caused these years to be so very rough, but those are mostly sorted out now. One of these things was that I received very poor academic advising from my university. I am reaping the rewards from those years by having an incredibly slack year at the very end.

I only have classes three days a week this semester, and the classes I’m taking are going to be much easier.

First, I’m taking Vertebrate Design. This is one of the only classes I have to take to finish out my biology degree. It’s mostly about how the physiology of vertebrates has changed and adapted through evolution. My major field of study is genes and evolution, so this is a nice way to round out the semester. It’s my only science course this fall. Last year I had at least four, but now just this one.

I’m taking Detective and Mystery Fiction, through the English department. I’ve read all the books on the reading list already, which greatly contributed to me taking the course. It also didn’t sound too difficult, and the name of the game this year is not difficult.

My next class is called Vampires. Yeahhhh...I felt silly signing up, but it will not be difficult. It’s also only one day a week, so I only have to think about it the one day.
I’m taking a course called Rise of Rome. It seems to be a continuation of the ancient history course I took three years ago. I like the prof a lot as a person, so I have high hopes.

Finally, I’m taking Pirates before 1850. There’s not a thing wrong with that.
I don’t mean to slam the arts students, but this a lot of fluff compared to my usual math/chemistry/physics/biology course load with no fun classes at all. Don’t get me wrong, the things I do in my hard sciences I find both interesting and fun, but they aren’t easy at all. I’m looking forward to things being an easier change of pace.

Also, since I have a little bit more time on my hands, and things are calming down, I've got a blog schedule on the go, so probably starting next week things will even out a little bit more.

How’s your school year going? Are you taking anything interesting?
