Blogmas #22: Samples from Lush

Today I woke up to a snowstorm, so we’re just hiding out in my house where it’s nice and warm watching Christmas movies and eating. As I’m typing, the snowploughs are finally out. A bunch of my friends were supposed to be flying in from Toronto and Montreal but all the flights are cancelled, so that’s not happening. It really is just a stay-put kind of day.

Back when I bought my shampoo from Lush, they tossed a few samples in my bag. I had forgotten about them until the last couple of days, when I went and gave them a try. They had just tossed these in my bag without my asking, which was really nice. They gave me Veganese Conditioner, Roots Hair Treatment, and Honey I Washed the Kids soap.

Veganese is a conditioner for fine hair, and it promises to not weigh your hair down. It was not my cup of tea in the slightest. I do have fine hair, just a lot of it, and it made it really puffy looking. I wasn’t really enjoying that. It also smells kind of dirty, like unwashed people, with a lavender hint. The scent also lingers in the hair so you can smell it all day. It also wasn’t particularly good at conditioning. I’m a little wary about conditioners that lather up a whole bunch like this one did. The consistency of it is also very thin, and I prefer a thicker conditioner. It does have some benefits though. My hair was completely tangle free (not an easy task) when I rinsed it out, and like the name implies, it is completely vegan. Many natural conditioners contain lanolin, which comes from sheep’s wool, or egg products, and this one has neither. I won’t be buying it, but if you have fine hair and can handle the smell, you may want to give it a try.

Roots is a hair treatment to help out some fried hair. I was noticing that my hair was a little dry the other day, so I thought it would be a good time to give this a try. I didn’t notice a big difference in my hair. I spread it through my hair and left it for twenty minutes, like the shopgirl said. It dried white and hard and was difficult to rinse out. It does smell really nice, like peppermint, and makes your scalp tingle nicely. It isn’t cheap for a hair treatment, and it takes a lot of product to cover your hair. I don’t think it made my hair any worse, but it wasn’t any better, so I don’t think that this is one for me.

Finally, I got a piece of Honey I Washed the Kids soap. I really like this. It smells like toffee, and has a real piece of honeycomb on the top. And I love honey. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love bees. I think they’re fascinating and honey just smells and tastes so nice and does wonders in lotions and medicines and shampoo. It doesn’t have a lot of lather, but leaves your skin soft. When I finish off the bar I got, I might have to pick up some more. It also doesn’t irritate sensitive skin at all, and is really wonderful.

Today’s advent calendar item was a star necklace.

It’s really cheap. The star is made of plastic, and it’s really just on a string. I’m not impressed. Another Christmas gift for my eight-year-old niece.
