Skoshbox August 2014

It’s that time again! This month’s Skoshbox has arrived. Skoshbox is a subscription service of Japanese treats for you to try. If you want to see what I said last time, you can check out the other posts here.

This month there were ten exciting Japanese snacks that I was very excited to try out.

Green Tea Oreo

Oreos are already America’s favorite cookie, but this one was different. First, it was soft. Kind of like a whoopee pie? The filling is also (as the name indicates) green tea flavored. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t like matcha flavored things. I think it tastes like grass. For me, I didn’t enjoy this too much because of the texture, not the taste. The filling is almost foamy, and the cookie just smooshes apart in your mouth. It’s just not my thing.

Sanko Zara Jiman Senbei

As we learned last month, senbei is a crunchy rice cracker-y thing. This is a crunchy rice cracker-y thing with sugar on top. I liked the way this one crunched. It’s extra crispy. I did not like the coarse sugar. It didn’t mesh well with the extremely salty cracker.

Teriyaki Burger Umaibo

I’ve gotten an umaibo (puffed corn stick) every month so far, and they are really not my taste. That’s just a fact. It has a cheeto-like texture with a strange teriyaki aftertaste. In all fairness, I would never purchase something called a Teriyaki Burger Puffed Corn Stick.

Pocky

This is the first thing I’ve gotten in a Skoshbox that I’ve been familiar with. I love pocky. Chocolate covered cracker sticks? Who doesn’t like these? You can get these at the grocery here, so it isn’t special or unusual, but they’re great.

Pokemon Ramune

This is a pokemon themed candy, but that was just the packaging. I feel like I’m the only person who was never into pokemon. It’s little faintly grape candies. They taste kind of like sweet tarts. I liked these. They went into my purse for snacking on through the day.

Maison de Kukkia

Just what I needed, more matcha! This was a very thin wafer, almost like a communion wafer, with the same whipped green tea filling that was in the oreo. This suffered, like so many other things in this box, from a problem with texture. The strange whipped filling just didn’t work for me.

Kasugai Apple Gummy

Last month there was an abundance of jelly candies that I did not particularly enjoy, so I was a little cautious biting into this guy. It’s delicious. It’s a pretty standard gummy candy, but the apple flavor is great.

Sakura Mochi Chocolate

Each month I’ve gotten a chocolate from this same brand. This one was cherry blossom and azuki bean with a mochi filling. I liked this much more than I thought I was going to. I liked the subtle floral flavor, even though it was strange, and the chewy mochi (glutinous rice) center. This one is good.

Caplico Cones

This looks like a severed unicorn horn. I feel like I say everything tastes like wafer cookies, but this seriously does. Mine was chocolate flavored. It does have a creamy ice-cream-ish filling surrounded by a pretty standard waver cone. Not bad.

French Papiro

I’m not sure what makes this French. It had a matcha filling, but it was completely overpowered by the cloying sweetness of the cookie around. It’s probably the only time ever that I will say I want more matcha flavor.

So that's this month's Skoshbox. Overall, still impressed. It's something fun to do over a couple of nights. It's also something out of the ordinary.
