Fifty Shades of Grey: OPI Nail Varnish Collection

A package from OPI landed on my doorstep this week: the Fifty Shades of Grey nail varnish set.

Six glorious minis, making up the whole new range for the film.

Flash back a few years (has it really been that long!?). I did a pair of posts about Fifty Shades. Overall opinion: awful writing and harmful themes. But it is a major pop culture moment, and it's hard to ignore with the giant movie dropping on Valentine's Day.

To be honest, I would have a hard time avoiding this set for two reasons, had it not been sent to me.

Reason one: I love the OPI minis. Who finishes a whole bottle of nail polish anyway? OPI is my a prior varnish brand and it's so easy to try so many fun colors with these sets.

Reason two: at the risk of sounding boring, gray is one of my favorite colors. It's versatile and allows other colors to really pop. I love it, and I love that there are FIVE of them in this set.

So, let's look at the range.

My Silk Tie
This silky gleaming silver has got me all tied up.

I love this color. It's a subtle, wonderful silver that I could wear any day. I will enjoy this.

Dark Side of the Mood
This brooding, stormy charcoal is dangerously gorgeous.

This is the only color that I am kind of disappointed in. It's not quite the same as it appears in the bottle, and is really streaky to apply. Not the best by any stretch.

Romantically Involved
I'm in a deep relationship with this luscous red creme.

The only not-gray color in collection, this is a vibrant true red. Everyone needs a great red nail sometimes, and this is a great choice.

Embrace the Gray
Let this chic, moody gray creme become one with you.

This is a darker gray color. Of all the colors it went on the smoothest, and was the most opaque. Because of that, I think it will be a when I need a quick, chic mani.

Shine for Me
This shimmering silver with subtle blue sparkle really turns me on!

This is more of a topcoat than anything else. Two coats and it's nowhere near opaque. The color is awesome though. Just a little bit blue, mostly just sparkly. I think it will look great over Embrace the Gray or Cement the Deal.

Cement the Deal
I'd sign anything to get my hands on this stony, cool gray.

This is the lightest of the three gray shades. Probably best for the transition into spring that is coming someday. I'd be interested in doing a gray nail art with stripes of this and a darker shade. I think that would be pretty for a fun winter day out.

Am I going to see the movie? Probably not. Am I going to wear these colors all the time? You bet. I think that with some playing with them, these will be great additions to my nail polish stash.

Opinions on Fifty Shades?

All swatches are two thin coats.
