Must-see Places in Halifax!
Today I’d like to talk a little more about where I live:
Halifax! Halifax is a pretty big business center, having the second largest
natural harbor, but it also has a large amount of tourist traffic, due to our
international airport that supports most international flights. Here are my
favorite things that you can see in this great city!
Citadel
The Halifax Citadel is an old fortress that was built to
protect Halifax from a threat that never really happened. It was originally
built in the American Revolution, just in case they decided to make a trip
north to attack Canada. That didn’t happen, but the fort was still there in the
event of an attack. It’s now a museum, complete with soldiers to re-enact a day
in the life of a military soldier. There’s museum exhibits, and a café, and
they fire a cannon every day at noon. It’s pretty neat. There’s also the Old
Town Clock at the base of the hill, which is one of the most recognizable (and
photographed) place in Halifax. The clock actually still must be wound twice a
week so it will keep running, and it’s accurate, I promise.
Shopping!
What’s a vacation without some shopping? The Halifax
Shopping Centre and the Mic Mac Mall are both good spots for that, boasting
both high-end and low-end shopping. There’s also an Apple Store opening at the
HSC in a few weeks! I’m excited for that, mostly just to see the crowd.
Maritime museum of the Atlantic
This museum is located right on the water, so it’s a great
spot to check out while you’re down meeting Theodore the Tugboat and munching
on a Beavertail. It’s easily one of my favorite places in the city. At the museum,
there are regularly ships for you to tour and ask questions about. The museum
also has a huge collection of Titanic artifacts, both authentic and replica
(for you to touch), because Halifax played a big part in the recovery of the
Titanic victims. It’s haunting, and beautiful, and worth the time. If you’re in
Halifax for a Titanic experience, I also recommend visiting the Fairview Lawn Cemetery,
where you’ll find the grave of “J. Dawson”.
Discovery Centre
This is a fantastic spot to take the kids. I love this place
now, at 20. It’s a hands-on science centre, with all kinds of fun activities
for kids of all ages. It has a whole room where all you do is blow giant
bubbles!
Pier 21
Pier 21 is the Ellis Island of Canada. It’s officially the
National Museum of Immigration. You go on a little journey that takes you
through the immigration process that was done there in the 1920s. It’s really fascinating. If you know a
relative who went through Pier 21, you can also look them up!
Alexander Keith Brewery
This is last of my must
see attractions. The brewery is fantastic. At a lot of breweries, you walk
around, see some vats of beer, and it’s boring. At this one, it’s 1820, and you
get led on a musical extravaganza of history. At the end, you also get to
sample some of the ales. It’s really a great time, and you can bring the kids
too! There’s lemonade for them, but it’s still a fun time.
And of course, you can always see me in Halifax! ;)
Have a great day, and I hope you visit soon :)
