Easy Peasy Lip Scrub

Well folks, as much as I'd like to pretend it isn't true, it's getting colder. Walking to class today the air definitely had a crisp feel, and I found myself wishing I'd brought a heavier jacket. As the cold weather descends, there are some things that I like (scarves, boots, the return of flannel, jumping in leaves, pumpkins) and things I don't (it's bloody cold), but there is one thing I hate more than anything else in the cold, and that is the return of the dry, cracked lips.

I get them every winter. They're dry, flaky, and only look worse when smeared with lip colour. Just terrible. To fix this, there's a few different lip scrubs on the market. To be honest, there's some I like, and some I don't. The ones I like tend to be a bit more pricey, and I hate spending money on something like that. So, after doing some tinkering and thinking and poking about, I adapted out this recipe that works for me without fail.

First, you're going to need some coconut oil. This stuff is pure magic. You can use it on your hair, skin, and nails, and you can cook with it (although it has about a thousand calories).I already had a jar around the house that I use on my hair from time to time. I used about a table-tennis ball size for this recipe.

Next, some brown sugar. Whatever you have works. This is going to be the exfoliating part of the scrub. Three or four tablespoons is a sufficient amount. You'll know when the consistency starts to be about right.

Finally, a little dab of vanilla flavour. The one I use is artificial, but it doesn't really matter. The important thing is the scent. It gets you that nice taste, rather than just an oily sweet taste. A couple of drops of this work really well.

I mixed all of these things up in a mug. It made quite a bit. A few weeks' supply. Every few days (probably once or twice a week), I massage a dab over my lips, and then rinse off. Afterwards, my lips are smooth and soft, with no obnoxious flakes. When I'm not using it, I store mine in the fridge (the oil gets liquidy if it's not kept cold) in an old black pot from Lush. The best part is that it tastes great, is completely natural, and cheap!
