Oscar Predictions
Buckle
your seatbelts, because this is going to be a long one. It's time for
the Oscars. I did my best to watch as many as I could this year, and
I feel like I'm ready to make some predictions. There are 24
categories, but I don't think that all of them hold equal weight. Here are the ones that are important to me.
Let's do this thing.
Best
Picture
American Sniper
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash

The Theory of Everything
Whiplash
This
one is the big gun right herre. Who is going to win this one? I think
that it should be The Theory of Everything, although I really, really
loved The Imitation Game. Real love for both of these movies. I think
that this year is a strong year in terms of contenders and none of
these make me scream NO YOU CANNOT WIN.
Actor
Steve Carell in “Foxcatcher”
Bradley Cooper in “American Sniper”

Bradley Cooper in “American Sniper”
Benedict Cumberbatch in “The Imitation Game”
Michael Keaton in “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”
Eddie Redmayne in “The Theory of Everything”
Eddie
Redmayne deserves this one. He is so good at being Stephen Hawking
that it is hard to tell them apart. It's wonderful, and he deserves
that recognition.
Supporting
Actor
Robert Duvall in “The Judge”
Ethan Hawke in “Boyhood”
Edward Norton in “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”
Mark Ruffalo in “Foxcatcher”
J.K. Simmons in “Whiplash”

J.K.
Simmons. His performance in Whiplash was wonderful. He won the Golden
Globe, and he should win the Oscar.
Actress
Marion Cotillard in “Two Days, One Night”
Felicity Jones in “The Theory of Everything”
Julianne Moore in “Still Alice”
Rosamund Pike in “Gone Girl”
Reese Witherspoon in “Wild”
Marion Cotillard in “Two Days, One Night”
Felicity Jones in “The Theory of Everything”
Julianne Moore in “Still Alice”
Rosamund Pike in “Gone Girl”
Reese Witherspoon in “Wild”
I
feel in my heart that Felicity Jones deserves this. But I feel like
Julianne Moore is going to win this one. I have decided to just
accept that.
Supporting
Actress
Patricia Arquette in “Boyhood”
Laura Dern in “Wild”
Keira Knightley in “The Imitation Game”
Emma Stone in “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”
Meryl Streep in “Into the Woods”

Laura Dern in “Wild”
Keira Knightley in “The Imitation Game”
Emma Stone in “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”
Meryl Streep in “Into the Woods”
Laura
Dern. So much Laura Dern. She was wonderful as Reese Witherspoon's
mother, and I hope that she takes this one home.

Big
Hero 6. This isn't even an argument. It beat the crap out of all
these other movies.

The
Imitation Game. I actually had the opportunity to read the screenplay
some months before the movie came to be and was blown away. It
deserves this one.

Boyhood,
because of the foresight it took when writing the screenplay to have
the actors stick around for 12 years. Also because I think it was the
best written of these, although not the best movie.
Cinematography
“Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” Emmanuel Lubezki
“The Grand Budapest Hotel” Robert Yeoman

Unbroken.
I didn't like the movie much, but it was truly beautifully shot.

I
hate it when there isn't just an immediate frontrunning for the best
costumes. Some extravagant period piece that you just know
is
going to win. This time, I think that it's going to be Into the
Woods.

“Virunga” Orlando von Einsiedel and Joanna Natasegara
Last
Days in Vietnam was my favorite of these, although The Salt of the
Earth was also interesting. I don't think I watch enough
documentaries.

Steve Carrel looks so olldddd, and it's more subtle than Guardians of
the Galaxy.

I
had a hard time picking this one. I really liked Lost Stars from
begin again...like I still listen to it a
lot,
but I think they might give this one to Selma. Hard call.

I'll be surprised if Feast doesn't win. It's so cute and so wonderful. I think that you should go find it if you haven't watched it yet.

Interstellar.
All the way. I love space movies for the way they look. It's just
beautiful.
Whew. We're done. Who are your picks for tomorrow night? Ideas of who will be the big six (Best/Supporting Actor/Actress, Director, Picture)?
