Sephora Play! August 2017
This month's Sephora Play! is probably my favorite theme they've ever done. It's called Makeup Geek and is full of innovators. The samples this month were pretty teeny...you'll see what I mean.
As per usual, there are five items, plus a perfume sample. Each box also comes with a Play! Pass, which you can redeem for a one-on-one tutorial in-store, plus 50 bonus Sephora points. I no longer live within three hours of a Sephora, so that is kind of wasted on me.
beautyblender micro.mini - $9
Revolutionary mini makeup applicator sponge for highlighting, contouring, and concealing. Perfectly shaped to reach the smallest parts of your face.
It's so teeeny! I love the original beauty blender. I don't think that I really need this. I could get by with just the normal beautyblender. Now that I have this, I'm using it, but I wuldn't spend my hard-earned dollars on it. I don't think that you should spend your hard earned dollars on it either. Instead, I'd go with the regular-sized beautyblender and skip this.
Would purchase? No.
Clinique Dual-Ended High Impact Mascara & Primer Duo - $8.00
Two-sided lash primer and mascara for longer-lasting eye looks and full, soft, lustrous lashes.
The only thing that I really care about is the ability of my mascara to stay on. This one does stay on. I think that the primer makes a serious difference in the look of the lashes compared to using mascara alone, but I don't think that the overall effect is very dramatic. It looks natural. Nothing spectacular, but okay.
Would repurchase? Probably not. There are other mascaras I like more.
Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick in Shell - $9 (wtf)
Highly pigmented foundation with the coverage of a concealer, smoothness of a liquid, and weightlessness of a powder.
Sending foundation is a gamble. I saw on Instagram that there was significant outrage about the color choices. With a mass box like this, not everyone is going to be a match for the color they receive. The color they sent me, Shell, is an excellent match. It felt like winning the lottery. I don't really like working with stick foundations. I don't like that they come with significantly less product for the more money. Contrast the .25oz size of the Hourglass Stick vs the 1 oz size of their liquid foundation. The price doesn't match the size difference either. That said, this is a good foundation. It stays on all day without feeling oily. I don't like how it blends, but I like the finish, so I'll be using it up, without repurchasing. The color selection also caters to a wide variety of undertones, but could use some work in the deeper shades category, but so could almost every brand.
Would repurchase: No, but it's worth swatching when you're at Sephora.
GLAMGLOW VOLCASMIC Matte Glow Moisturizer – $5.40
This deeply hydrating water-pressed cream, infused with volcanic minerals, delivers a unique matte glow -- perfect for makeup prep.
This has a unique consistency that I wasn't expecting. It's semi-solid, like cold body butter. I love the way it feels. It moisturizes my skin like no other. The description of "matte glow" is accurate. It's not shiny, but makes my skin look very healthy and rested. Also, what a terrible name. Seriously. Stop hiring middle school boys to do your marketing.
Would repurchase? Yesssss...but that pricetag! $54!
Alterna Haircare CAVIAR Anti-Aging Miracle Multiplying Volume Mist - $8.75
Lightweight hairstyling mist adds volume and texture to hair while strengthening and softening for full, lustrous, night-out-worthy strands.
Volume is not something that I have an issue with, and I don't seem to have the issue now. I can't tell a difference in volume before or after using this. It makes my hair feel soft and look shiny, but no volume change.
Would repurchase? Nah, but I'll try their shampoo and conditioner.
Dolce&Gabbana Light Blue
This fresh, citrusy scent channels the sunshine-filled Mediterranean Sea with notes of bluebell, white rose, and cedar.
I love that Sephora is sending out some more well-known perfumes. I used to wear D&G Light Blue in college, so it smells very nostalgic. I think that I've outgrown it, but it was a nice trip down memory lane.
Would repurchase? If I was 19 again.
All in all, this was a good box, in that I’m using everything. I wouldn't repurchase...so that's how that goes, but I'm happy to try out a few new things and have another beauty blender in the collection. You can’t complain about a $10 beauty box giving you that much value.
