Academy Awards: 2012

I love the movies. I watch a lot of movies, and I enjoy every minute. I’ve always loved movies. I watched my first presentation of the Oscars when I was 6. Back then, I thought that Academy wasn’t a real group of people, it was kind of like thanking God for your award, you say it, but you don’t really know. Those days are long past, but the Oscars are still a big part of annual tradition. I watch every year, absorbing the glamour and beauty of it all, and this year I was not disappointed.

This year's theme was what going to the movies feels like. The whole evening was phenomenal.

There was a Cirque du Soleil performance, which was completely breathtaking. I didn’t even know who to look at.

Then there were the winners. I was rooting for Christopher Plummer all night. I’ve been a fan of him for so long, and it was really great to see him take home the Best Supporting Actor trophy for Beginners. As a side note, he said it was his favorite role yet.

I haven’t actually seen The Artist, but I feel like I should after it took the awards for Best Picture, Best Actor (Jean Dujardin), and Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), plus Best Costume Design. The Director thanked the dog that starred in the movie. That was cute :)

The Artist, which is nearly silent, and black and white.
In the snubbings category, I don’t think The Iron Lady should have won for best makeup. My bets were on Harry Potter, mostly because of all the goblin looks they created every day, or even Albert Nobbs, where they made Glenn Close into a man. Not Margaret Thatcher giving the TV a stupid look. She looked like Meryl Streep. Nothing fancy, just everyday Meryl (She also won for Best Actress).

I was hoping that Melissa McCarthy would win Best Supporting Actress for her role in Bridesmaids, just for the sheer hilarity of the idea. However, Octavia Spencer took the Oscar for the Help, but I don’t think anyone could have deserved it more, or been any more endearing in the process.

Hugo really cleaned up. That’s all I can really say about that. I don’t know how Martin Scorsese does it, but he does it right.

Then there’s always the fashion. People look so beautiful at the Academy Awards!

My four favorites, I think were Stacy Keibler, Octavia Spencer, Natalie Portman, and Penelope Cruz. Stacy Keibler looked great. George, you better hang on to her. Octavia Spencer, embracer of curves, looked fabulous in a sequined white number. Natalie Portman looked great in polka dots. I thought it was classy, but fun at the same time. Penelope Cruz just looks like she’s meant to be at the Oscars. She has this old Hollywood glamor that is simply timeless. She looked great in her gray-blue gown.

This year’s Academy Awards were over the top fun. I haven’t even mentioned Billy Chrystal’s subtle, yet hilarious, jabs throughout the show as the esteemed host. It was clear that in a time of declining viewership, the Academy wants nothing more than to bring back the feeling of regality and luxury once lost from Hollywood.
