Golden Globe Predictions 2014
The Golden Globe Awards are coming up, so I thought we could talk nominees for a minute. Warning, this post is hella long. Way longer than I had anticipated. But I think it's really comprehensive. Every year, I watch every Oscar nominated movie, and since the Golden Globes often predict the Oscars, I try to watch a lot of these too. I think I've done pretty well. I'm feeling informed, anyway. So here we go. I did warn you that it was long, right?
Motion Picture Categories
Best Motion Picture Drama
In this category, there are some major contenders. Philomena, although It hasn’t gotten much wide press, is a pretty great movie, albeit a little morose. I also had a really hard time tracking it down to watch it. I didn’t like Gravity, but it seems like everyone else did. I found the characters flat, but the special effects amazing. Captain Phillips was much the same. I feel was supposed to grip you, and it didn’t grip me like I was hoping. Intense, but not intense enough. I really liked Rush, but when I saw that it was nominated, I had a ‘one of these things is not like the others’ moment. 12 Years a Slave is my definite pick. I feel like it will win this, as well as the Oscar. I also did a lengthy review on it here.
My Pick: 12 Years a Slave
Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy
These weren’t particularly funny movies, I’m afraid. I haven’t seen Inside Llewyn Davis, but I feel like I will like it. I enjoy most of the Coen Brothers movies, and from what I’ve seen this will be great. It’s just been inaccessible where I live. Her was really good, as were American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street. I have no desire to see Nebraska. I will end up watching it if it’s nominated for an Oscar, but only then. I think American Hustle should get it. It’s funny without being overstated. I would say Her, except it’s female characters are a little dry and that’s not okay with me.
My Pick: American Hustle

Television Categories
Best TV Comedy or Musical
- Girls
- Modern Family
- Parks and Recreation
- The Big Bang Theory
- Brooklyn Nine-Nine
I think Modern Family is going to continue its run, and win this bad boy. Plus that show is just so funny. I heard that Girls was the other major contender. The last season of Girls didn’t have the same charm as the first one did, so I don’t think that it will win.
My Pick: Modern Family
Best TV Drama
- Breaking Bad
- Downton Abbey
- The Good Wife
- House of Cards
- Masters of Sex
I think the choice here is obvious, based on all of the hype about this show, particularly when it ended. I have been really enjoying House of Cards though, so if it takes it, I won’t be too surprised.
My Pick: Breaking Bad
Best Actress in a TV Drama
- Julianna Marguiles, The Good Wife
- Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black
- Taylor Schilling, Orange Is the New Black
- Kerry Washington, Scandal
- Robin Wright, House of Cards
I really enjoyed Orange is the New Black, but I think that Scandal is where the quality is right now, and Kerry Washington pulls a lot of the weight on that show. I also hate the Good Wife. Like a lot.
My Pick: Kerry Washington, as always
Best Actress in a TV Comedy
- Zooey Deschanel, New Girl
- Lena Dunham, Girls
- Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
- Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation
Julia Louis-Dreyfus will win this award. I don’t think there’s much else to say.
My Pick: Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Best Actor in a TV Drama
- Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
- Liev Schreiber, Ray Donovan
- Michael Sheen, Masters of Sex
- Kevin Spacey, House of Cards
- James Spader, The Blacklist
I talked about Breaking Bad a little bit before, and I think that it’s going to do a sweep of all the categories its nominated in, including this one.
My Pick: Bryan Cranston
Best Actor in a TV Comedy
- Jason Bateman, Arrested Development
- Don Cheadle, House of Lies
- Michael J. Fox, The Michael J. Fox Show
- Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
- Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
My Pick: Michael J. Fox
Best Miniseries or TV Movie
- American Horror Story: Coven
- Behind the Candelabra
- Dancing on the Edge
- Top of the Lake
- White Queen
My Pick: Behind the Candelabra
Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie
- Helena Bonham Carter, Burton and Taylor
- Rebecca Ferguson, White Queen
- Jessica Lange, American Horror Story
- Helen Mirren, Phil Spector
- Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake
My bet is on Elisabeth Moss. She’s come a long way since frumpy Peggy on Mad Men. I didn’t like Burton and Taylor, or the White Queen. I liked American Horror Story, but Jessica Lange wasn’t special. I didn’t see Phi Spector, so it could be great. Helen Mirren very well may win.
My Pick: Elisabeth Moss
Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie
- Matt Damon, Behind the Candelabra
- Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra
- Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dancing on the Edge
- Idris Elba, Luther
- Al Pacino, Phil Spector
Liberace really isn’t my scene, but Behind the Candelabra was really good. I was surprised at how good, if we’re being honest. Michael Douglas does the heavy lifting, so I chose him over Matt Damon. I didn’t see Phil Spector though, so I am a little bit ignorant on to how good that could have been.
My Pick: Michael Douglas
Best Supporting Actress in a TV Show, Miniseries or TV Movie
- Jacqueline Bisset, Dancing on the Edge
- Janet McTeer, White Queen
- Hayden Panettiere, Nashville
- Monica Potter, Parenthood
- Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
The choices in this category were a little weak, I thought. I love Modern Family, so they have my vote, but the choices this round were not great.
My Pick: Sofia Vergara
Best Supporting Actor in a TV Show, Miniseries or TV Movie
- Josh Charles, The Good Wife
- Rob Lowe, Behind the Candelabra
- Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad
- Corey Stoll, House of Cards
- Jon Voight, Ray Donovan
Aaron Paul was the best part of Breaking Bad this past season, so I hope that he gets this. I think he deserves it. I wouldn’t count out Rob Lowe though. Behind the Candelabra was really well-done, so I think that he could be a contender too.
My Pick: Aaron Paul
Whoa, long post. Yikes. We'll see how I do when the awards actually air on Sunday, January 12th. I will be doing a fashion recap a day or two later. I will also be live tweeting the event, so you can follow along if you'd like.
What do you think of this year's nominees?
