Golden Globe Fashion Recap
Last night was the Golden Globe Awards, and I feel like it was just okay. It wasn’t spectacular. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were funny, but their jokes dragged on a little sometimes. My picks turned out to be really, really wrong. I think I got like five right out of 25. For the most part, I think that the people who won deserved to win, although I was nothing short of shocked when Amy Adams beat Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence beat out Julia Roberts and Lupita Nyong’o.
I was also not very impressed with the fashion, unfortunately. I felt like the people who were good were excellent, and the people who were bad missed the mark entirely. So, I present, in no particular order, what stood out to me as the big hits and misses of the night.
Hit: Lupita Nyong’o
It takes some ovaries to wear a cape. I love this. The colour is so bright and she looked so comfortable in it. She’s a new star, but if you look through her recent red carpet photos, you’ll see why she’s one to watch.
Miss: Lena Dunham
I wanted to like this. She was a pop of colour on the unusually plain runway. Unfortunately, this dress just didn’t fit. She was fidgety and obviously uncomfortable the whole night. It’s the kind of mistake I expect to see on people going to their first awards show, but this isn’t her first rodeo.
Hit: Giuliana Marguelies
It’s always a fine balance of classic without being boring on the red carpet. This dress would have been boring in plain black, but the gold details make it stunning. The minimal jewelry and makeup just add to its refinement.
Miss: Kerry Washington
It’s hard to do pregnant right on the red carpet, and I felt like this was a miss. It was frumpy and poorly fitted. Kerry Washington is one of my consistent fashion favourites, but this was just not up to her usual standard.
Hit: Michelle Dockery
Michelle Dockery always looks so pleased to be invited. She always has this understated British elegance that is what makes her so endearing. She opted for something plainer than her usual, but I love it. It’s classic, but not boring.
Miss: Emma Watson
You need to wear a dress to this event. Not pants. End of story.
Hit: Olivia Wilde
Finally, pregnant done the right way. Olivia Wilde looks radiant. She was looking confident and beautiful in this green sequined gown. It was also seasonally appropriate. I know that it’s hot in LA, but it is still January.
Miss: Jemima Kirke
This had a lot of things that were just not right. It was ill-fitting and was a strange dirty colour. It looks careless and not in a good way, especially when you set her up next to the other stars that night.
Hit: Taylor Swift
I don’t like this retro strange thing that Taylor is doing with her hair these days, but I love this dress. The pink really pops against her skin, but it’s grounded by this black sweetheart neckline and black details through the bustle.
Miss: Caitlin Fitzgerald
I’m not sure if it was the colour or the high neck or the boredom of this outfit that did it in. It might have been all three. It was also made out of this funny quilted material. It just didn’t feel right.
Hit: Sarah Paulson
This could have gone so badly, but with her sleek hair and accessories, this dress comes off as polished and feminine and not try-too-hard.
Miss: Paula Patton
I felt like this wouldn’t be out of place at like the MET costume ball, but it looked really bizarre here. The Golden Globes also includes dinner, and that giant ruffle looks really cumbersome to eat in. It’s also worth pointing out that this is Mrs Robin Thicke.
Hit: Usher
I feel like there is a double standard with fashion. Guys always look good at these things as long as their suit fits. It takes a lot to be really exceptional, or to really screw it up. Usher is on the list because he did something different. His oxblood tuxedo with black stylings was crisp and modern and stood out against everyone else.
Miss: Drew Barrymore
Once again, it’s a story of pregnant gone wrong. I have no idea what is even going on here. There’s some weird overlay and a high-low hem and a bright matching lip...it’s too much, and it’s not good.
Hit: Camilla Alves
Look at her. Mrs Matthew McConaughey was looking fantastic from the cascading waves to the gorgeous sequined dress. Every inch a hit.
Miss: Julia Roberts
The issue that I had with this dress was that from the waist up, she was heading out to the office. If she had eliminated the weird dress-shirt-y top, she would have been good to go.
Hit: Mila Kunis
Mila Kunis knows how to do edgy while still being feminine. I loved this embellished gown, and not everyone could pull off a smoky eye with it.
Miss: Jennifer Lawrence
Oh Jennifer. She’s got a slamming body and is legitimately one of my favourites, but I think she hasn’t found her fashion footing yet. This dress looked rumpled and unflattering. Pints for the pixie cut and the bold lip though.
Hit: Kate Beckinsale
This was just stunning. It fit her like a glove, and was interesting enough to hold your attention when she walked by. Excellent choice.
Miss: Emma Stone
She didn’t walk the red carpet, only presented an award, and I’m kind of happy that she didn’t so that I didn’t have to listen to commentators pretend to love whatever this monstrosity is. Shapeless and strange.
Well. There's another year gone by. Hopefully the Oscars a little bit better.
