Academy Awards 2014 Fashion Recap
I had really mixed feelings about the Oscars this year. I thought that it was kind of dry and boring. At the same time, I felt like everyone there was having a lot of fun and that you could see that. I also got most of my Oscar picks right, which is always a plus. Lupita Nyong'o made me cry with her speech, so you know it must have been kind of okay. Also watching Brad Pitt pass out pizza with Ellen Degeneres was great. I wasn't sure how that gag was going to play out, but it worked for them.
In terms of clothes, I thought that the biggest problem last night, as with anyone really, is that a lot of the dresses were ill-fitting. You always look worse when your clothes don't fit. But there were some real gems.
Idina Menzel was one of the most anticipated performances of the night, and while she may have had trouble hitting all the high notes (which I don't think was entirely her fault), she looked wonderful. She looked pretty enough to almost make up for John Travolta calling her Adele Nazeem.
I like to have at least one guy on my list, and this year, it's Jared Leto. First, the man defies age at 42. And he's the only man I can think of who can get away with flowing ombre waves. White jackets were a big trend for men this year (see: Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Seacrest), and I think that he did it the best. The red bowtie set off the white so that it looked more classic, while still being unique. Also that hair.
Naomi Watts is also in white, proving that it's not an impossible colour to wear. What made this for me were her accessories. She has a geometric print black and white clutch, along with a geometric silver necklace, which really pulled the outfit together.
I was conflicted about Jennifer Garner's dress until she walked out to present an award and her fringe was swishing all over the place and I went wow. It was a bold choice, but I think it works for her.
Charlize Theron is never one to shy away from bold fashion choices. I would really have liked it if she had worn a colour, but I liked this. I think that with her sleek pixie cut that the dress was a perfect blend f classic and edgy.
Kate Hudson intimidates me when she shows up looking like the ice queen with her magically silvery dress and her cape and her ash blonde hair. She's the kind of woman that you feel threatened by. But also want to be. Because she looks like this. I also think that there should be more capes.
Lupita Nyong'o is my biggest girl crush right now. She has a wonderful personality and a great sense of style. I also like that when she won for Best Supporting Actress, you can see her say shit as soon as she's done hugging Brad Pitt. That's a real girl for you. She doesn't shy away from colour, and this dress is a great example of that. It's also nearly impossible to wear a handband after you're 12, and she still gets away with it.
If I knew I was going to take home an Oscar, this is what I would wear if I was 30 pounds thinner. Cate Blanchett managed to rock this nude-toned embellished gown without looking washed out or strange, which is a rare accomplishment. She looked like a winner.
I feel like Sandra Bullock knew that she wasn't going to win, but wanted to be a really glamorous loser. My favourite thing about this is her sideswept hair that offsets the draping on the opposite side. Gorgeous.
Jennifer Lawrence, my forever favourite. I like that she went for something simple with clean lines, but also in a bright colour. It's also hard to style a pixie cut for the red carpet, and while I wasn't a fan of her product-heavy slicked back look, I think that she made it work.
June Squibb is 84. Yeah, her green getup isn't as glamorous as a lot of the other gowns that women less than half her age are wearing, but it's age appropriate. My grandma was really into everything matching, and I felt like she would have liked this too.
Who do you think was the best (or worst) dressed? Did I forget anyone?
