Halloween SFX Makeup: Glassy Wound
Hi everyone!
I've never done any really in depth special effects makeup tutorials before, but it's something that I like. This is how to make a bruised wound with "glass" in it. You could also change the color palette a little and make it work for ice coming out of your skin. I think this would be great if you want as a car crash victim or a zombie or something.
If you try this out, definitely send me photos on Twitter or Instagram!
Here's another one I did that was more bruise-y and less open-wound-y.

You
will need:
- Liquid latex
If
you are allergic to latex, a latex-free eyelash glue will work too,
but not as well. Sorry. Also VERY IMPORTANTLY do not use this
anywhere with hair or you will lose some of it. Think eyebrows.
- Eyeshadow/Hydrocolor in magenta, black, and light blue:
The
colors I will be using are hydrocolor makeup paints, so they act just
like regular watercolor paints. Mine are in the Monster palette
from Wolfe FX. Ben Nye Magicake works too, and so does Kryolan
Aquacolor. If you don't have any of these things, using plain
eyeshadows mixed with water will give you similar but inferior
results.
The
colors that you really really need are a magenta/oxbloody red, black,
and a deadish blue color.
- Rock Candy
This
is what makes the glass shards. It looks a ton like safety glass and
is safe to use.
- Brushes and Sponges
Ones
that can get dirty and/or stained.
- Fake Blood
Halloween
store or homemade is fine
How to:
Okay,
if you're going for the dead look, I recommend going with a blue-tone
base instead of green. Blue takes the pink out of your skin and makes
you seem deceased. So, first I sponged on a layer of the blue paint.
After
the blue/gray layer is on, I like to sponge on some black to give it
some more of that bruised definitely-dead look. It makes the skin
tone look variegated and more like it should. This whole tutorial will be demonstrated on my left arm, but you could definitely do your whole face.
Now
for the glassy parts. Take your rock candy and whack it on the floor
a couple of times to break it up. Yeah, put some muscle into it. You
want chunks of many different sizes. Next, take these rock candy
sugar chunks and dip them in your liquid latex. Yes, liquid latex
always smells this awful. Place them close together on your “wound”
so that you start to get that embedded look.I like to start with the
big chunks and then the small bits. Get creative.
After
you have all the candy chunks on your arm, hold still and let it dry.
I think this would look so cool on your forehead, but remember, latex
does not go on your eyebrows.
After
that, take your bloody red/magenta color and paint around the glass
shards. I did this with my thin paintbrush, then blended the edges a
little with my sponge. I also put some in the middle of the shards to
make it look a little bloodier. Gross.
I
then added some black to the edges of the glass to make it have even
more depth.
Final
touches: Drip some of that fake blood in there to make it look extra
nasty.
Done.
You're
ready for an icky zombie Halloween now.
