Who Wins the Oscar? | 2016
Well. The red carpets
are rolling out tonight for the Oscars. There were a lot of great movies nominated
this year, and I feel really lucky to have gotten to see most of them. The
question of the night is definitely “who will win?”
These are my picks for
tonight’s winners.
Best Picture
The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Brooklyn
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight
The Revenant is my choice mostly because I feel that this year was a relatively week
category. I loved The Martian, but it’s not an Oscar movie. I also liked
Brooklyn and The Big Short, but they aren’t as great when it comes to general
artistic film quality as The Revenant. If it isn’t this one, Room is my second
choice.
Best Actor
Bryan Cranston –
Trumbo
Matt Damon – The Martian
Leonardo DiCaprio –
The Revenant
Michael Fassbender –
Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne – The Danish
Girl
Eddie Redmayne was
wooden and boring in The Danish Girl, and Matt Damon wasn’t serious enough. I
wasn’t a fan of Fassbender’s Steve Jobs, so we’re left with Leo and Bryan. I
would pick Leo first, and not because it’s “his year” but because he honestly
had the best performance. Cranston is a close second though.
Best Actress
Cate Blanchett – Carol
Brie Larson – Room
Jennifer Lawrence –
Joy
Charlotte Rampling –
45 Years
Saoirse Ronan –
Brooklyn
This was the category
I had the most trouble with. I think that this is going to belong to Brie
Larson, with Cate Blanchett as a close second.
Actor in a Supporting Role
Christian Bale – The Big
Short
Tom Hardy – The Revenant
Mark Ruffalo –
Spotlight
Mark Rylance – Bridge of
Spies
Sylvester Stallone – Creed
My heart says that Tom
Hardy was the best. His performance in The Revenant was better than Leo’s.
After saying that though, I think that Sylvester Stallone will likely win based
on what critics have said. But Tom Hardy probably deserves it.
Actress in a Supporting Role
Jennifer Jason Leigh –
The Hateful Eight
Rooney Mara – Carol
Rachel McAdams –
Spotlight
Alicia Vikander – The Danish Girl
Kate Winslet – Steve
Jobs
While Eddie Redmayne
was awful in The Danish Girl, Alicia Vikander stole that show. She wins.
Animated Feature Film
Anomalisa
Boy and the World
Inside Out
Shaun the Sheep Movie
When Marnie Was There
Inside Out, while
probably not the most artistic, is the most fun to watch. How did Shaun the
Sheep get nominated?
Cinematography
Carol
The Hateful Eight
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Revenant
Sicario
The Hateful Eight was
the most beautifully shot, with The Revenant being close. Both have a lot of
spectacular landscape shots of the western wilderness, and that’s always the
closest to my heart.
Costume Design
Carol
Cinderella
The Danish Girl
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Revenant
Cinderella, as a
movie, not great, but it had beautiful clothes. There’s no denying that.
Directing
The Big Short
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight
Again, this is The
Revenant’s year. If The Revenant doesn’t win, I would say the The Room would be
my next pick.
Those are my picks for
the Big 9 categories. Who do you think will win this year? Are there any
nominees who win in your heart, but not on stage?
Let me know!
